At the western edge of Black Butte Ranch is a getaway whose comfortable charm and renewed amenities blend perfectly with the spectacular surroundings. It’s a well-appointed but cozy retreat, and hot tub-equipped, making for a relaxing headquarters for the endless outdoor possibilities - biking, hiking, skiing, fishing, golf and tennis, all in one of the most scenic spots in the American West.
The knotty pine paneling, expansive picture windows, and 14-foot living-room ceiling fit the mountain motif, as does a classic, lava-rock fireplace that seems straight out of a ski lodge. The updated kitchen includes honey-hued alder cabinetry, a combination convection/microwave oven, and a gorgeous refinish of a pine picnic-style table.
A TV, DVD player, Bluetooth sound box, and WiFi availability are part of the living room, which adjoins a mud room designed to accommodate extensive ski equipment or double as staging area for the hot tub outside. The lower floor also houses the home’s a laundry room.
Upstairs, you’ll find an oversize room featuring a set of bunk beds, a TV, and an accompanying half-bath; and a loft with a futon. The loft has a table and another TV/DVD setup, and it makes for a great kids' gaming area. Also on the upper level is the largest bathroom.
Go outside the mud room downstairs and step onto a 1,300-square-foot deck, one of the largest at Black Butte. It’s easily big enough for entertaining, or it can be merely an inviting spot to relax on a variety of outdoor furniture.
The home is a great jumping-off point for the array of outdoor pursuits in Central Oregon. On-site are two memorable golf courses. Big Meadow, named by GolfWeek Magazine in 2013 as one of 'The Best Courses You Can Play' in Oregon, is a picturesque layout with mountain vistas, including the iconic view of the volcanic peak Three-Fingered Jack from the 14th tee. Glaze Meadow is a tighter track, but with similarly appealing panoramas, including the North Sister and Mount Washington.
A maze of bike paths crisscross Black Butte. There are four outdoor swimming pools, an indoor pool, a sauna, and a workout facility. The Ranch has four dining options, a couple of which overlook Phalarope Lake, a haven for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and fly-fishing. Horseback riding is another possibility, through stables on-site. Beyond the Ranch, but not far beyond, is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hoodoo Ski Area is 14 miles west, or to the east, you can venture outside Bend to one of the West’s best ski destinations, Mt. Bachelor. Fishing, hiking, camping, and other water sports options abound. The Western-themed town of Sisters is only eight miles east, and bustling Bend is just 45 minutes away.
