Lesser known to summer vacationers than the bustling town of Boothbay Harbor on the neighboring peninsula, Georgetown is home to a small colony of fishermen, boat builders, artists, and retirees. Yet it is also a magnet for birders, seafood lovers, and those in search of untouched coastal landscapes - a region that is best appreciated with a relaxing stay at one of our Georgetown vacation homes.

Learn more about Vacasa Premium Clean >Bordered by the Kennebec River to the west, the Sheepscot River to the east, and the Gulf of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, the island of Georgetown was once known to the Abenaki as Erascohegan - or the place of "good spearfishing." Today, this island in the heart of Midcoast Maine is home to the villages of Bay Point, Five Islands, Marrtown, Robinhood, and Georgetown itself, a town of 1,042 residents that sits 44 miles east of Portland and 10 miles south of Bath.
In 1946, the prosperous Georgetown businessman Walter Reid donated a tract of coastal land on the island's southeastern shore to the state of Maine, thereby preserving what would become known as Reid State Park. In the decades since, Maine's first state-owned saltwater beach park has drawn visitors from New England and beyond to stroll the wide sandy stretches of Mile and Half Mile Beaches; soak in the stunning seascapes of the Seguin Island Light Station, the Cuckolds Light, and Hendricks Head Light; and observe endangered least terns, piping plovers, and other nesting shorebirds in their natural habitats.
Closer to the center of the island, the Josephine Newman Audubon Sanctuary encompasses 119 acres of marshland, meadows, forests, shorelines, and rocky ridges, where hikers and birders can admire dozens of avian species while exploring nearly three miles of trails.
Due to Georgetown's pristine surrounding waterways, which are among the coldest and deepest on the coast of Maine, the island boasts some of the highest quality lobsters in the state. There's no better place to sample the local specialty than Five Islands Lobster Co., a working wharf known for its unforgettable lobster rolls, fresh steamers, and whole lobsters - all of which are served on a terrace overlooking the "prettiest harbor in Maine."
Although you could easily spend your days perusing the local artisans' creations at Georgetown Pottery, sipping a cocktail at the Tavern at Riggs Cove, or gazing at the coastal views from your vacation home, Georgetown is ideally located for exploring the picturesque villages and lovely waterways of Midcoast Maine.
Head 39 miles east to New Harbor on the Pemaquid Peninsula, an incredibly scenic region guarded by the Pemaquid Point Light on Johns and Muscongus Bays. Book an excursion with Maine Kayak Rentals, and you'll experience this gorgeous peninsula as it was meant to be enjoyed. Care to sample a few of Maine's most beloved culinary offerings? Drive a bit further east to Rockland on the shores of West Penobscot Bay, where you'll enjoy the Midcoast's favorite breakfast at Home Kitchen Café and its best farm-to-table offerings at Primo.
Just west of Georgetown in Phippsburg, the 529-acre Popham Beach State Park offers a long stretch of sandy beach with views of Fox and Wood Islands offshore. And on the way home, you'll pass through the famous shipbuilding city of Bath, where you can learn the fascinating local history at the Maine Maritime Museum.
This quiet and scenic island will help you truly understand the magic of Maine - book one of our lovely and unforgettable Georgetown vacation homes today!
