Where is Greenville, ME?

The town of Greenville is located in Piscataquis County on the southern shores of Moosehead Lake, the largest single-state lake east of the Mississippi River. You'll be just beyond the western reaches of the 100 Mile Wilderness, 70 miles northwest of Bangor, 150 miles north of bustling downtown Portland, and 265 miles due east of Montreal.

Things to do in Greenville, ME

Whether you're planning to visit in winter, spring, summer, or fall, our Greenville vacation rentals offer enviable proximity to the 74,890-acre Moosehead Lake.

Sunbathe, swim, and unwind at one of the three public beaches that are easily accessed from downtown Greenville. You'll find a wharf and a boat launch at Greenville Junction, a protected swimming area and a lifeguard at Red Cross Beach, and a wide stretch of sand and a children's playground at Lily Bay State Park nine miles north.

Catch a glimpse of Moose Mountain, the Spencer Mountains, and Mt. Katahdin with a cruise aboard the steamship Katahdin, a turn-of-the-century icon that makes its home at the Moosehead Marine Museum. Between Memorial Day and early September, you can launch your own boat to fish for bass, perch, trout, and salmon, or drop a kayak in Wilson Ponds, Prong Pond, Sawyer Pond, or one of the other nearby lakes and streams.

Spend summer mornings hiking Chairback Mountain, Big Moose Mountain, or Burnt Jacket Mountain, and head downtown for an afternoon of tennis on the public courts. Each winter, you can ski the scenic slopes of Big Squaw Mountain, play ice hockey on the town's outdoor rink, or cross-country ski and snowshoe on the countless lakeshore trails.

Day trips from Greenville, ME

Whether your interests lie in hiking, river rafting, or basking in the solitude of the Maine Highlands, you'll find it all within striking distance of our Greenville vacation rentals.

Get out of town for the day to hike the easy trail to Moxie Falls or the more challenging ascent of Big Spencer Mountain. For a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, you can scramble to the 5,268-foot summit of Mt. Katahdin, the tallest peak in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail just 70 miles northeast. Or, book a guided rafting excursion on the west outlet of the Kennebec River or the west branch of the Penobscot River - both of which will treat you to unspoiled views of Maine's lush woodland wilderness.
