This house is beautiful. The views of the ocean are incredible.

Overall, this is a pretty nice house that met the needs (of our family of 4 + one guest) well. Cape Mears is a sleepy oceanside community without services and off the main roads… So generally, the houses here are not new, fancy, or set up for extra large groups. Accessibility note: there are several stairs up to the front entrance, and the path to it has tripping hazards. We are able-bodied, but arriving in the dark with the porch light not on made our entry a little difficult. There are two comfortable living rooms. The downstairs one is probably original to the house, and has an electric heater and LED candles in the fireplace. The newer living room appears part of a second story addition to capture ocean view. There’s a new deck and views from inside the living room are pretty good too. We spent most of our time up here. There’s also a large table that seats six where we had dinner and played card games. Walk to the beach is easy, but know at that at high tide the beach here can be inaccessible, especially at the near end. It’s still possible to sit on the dune above and watch the waves or to walk to the north end of town and access a trail that heads out up the spit. It’s also a short drive or 45 minute walk to the Bayocean Park, which has a lovely walk on the bayside, which is less windy. This area is a birder’s delight. The hot tub was a highlight for our stay, good temperature and clean. The kitchen was adequate to our needs. And there’s a wide array of cookware… probably everything you need, including bakeware. The twin bunk beds are regular length and framed in so would not work for tall teens or adults. Only the Master bedroom has a TV (which we actually prefer).

If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay on the Oregon Coast that has great views and is very relaxing, I would recommend this place. Our first day there we agreed that we wanted to book it again in the future. The

Things to do in Cape Meares

Without a doubt, the number one attraction near town is the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint. The small but impressive park is home to both the shortest lighthouse and the most giant Sitka Spruce in Oregon, as well as some of the Coast's best views over the crashing Pacific Ocean. The viewpoints in the park are known as a prime whale-watching spot during migration season, and a favorite nesting ground for seabirds, including the common murre, bald eagle, and peregrine falcon.

On clear days, visitors might glimpse the tufted puffins and Steller sea lions who enjoy protected breeding grounds at the Three Arch Rocks Natural Wildlife Refuge to the southwest of Cape Meares. Many vacationers along the Oregon Coast pass through Cape Meares as they journey along the Three Capes Scenic Route, a 40-mile loop drive that meanders along the shoreline from Pacific City to Tillamook. Even on rainy days, when you might be tempted to hunker down in your cozy Cape Meares beach cottage, the well-marked path at Three Capes is worth an afternoon's exploration, showing off some of Oregon's most panoramic viewpoints in state parks at Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda.

Along the sandy beach of Cape Meares and in the surrounding parks, visitors can enjoy some of the best hiking, kayaking, kite-flying, crabbing, fishing, and birdwatching in the state. While Cape Meares itself is very quiet, the community is only five minutes from Oceanside, with fresh seafood and homemade desserts at Roseanna's Cafe or Brewin' in the Wind.

Day trips from Cape Meares

Within twenty minutes, Tillamook offers all the dining and shopping options of a larger town, plus the ultimate rainy-day activity: touring and tasting at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Cape Meares makes a convenient home base for exploring the Oregon Coast, with a number of popular tourist destinations within an hour and a half's drive: Cannon Beach and Seaside to the north, and Pacific City and Lincoln City to the south. Portland is under two hours away, and Seattle can be reached within four and a half hours.

Close to the conveniences of "civilization" but offering a true sense of getting away from it all, a stay at one of our Cape Meares vacation rentals is unmatched for its combination of natural beauty and peacefulness on the Northern Oregon Coast.
