Once you get past *that* goat trail they call a road, you'll be in heaven! Embrace the experience with a 4x4 (or *tall* car, as they say). Everything is upper end: kitchen ware, linens, towels, right down to the quilted toilet paper. Joel was always available and eager to help with any need or question. Noteworthy, is the environment of a living jungle and crashing waves; bring ear plugs if you want *peace and quiet*

Casa Contki is at the end of Matapalo Rd, an unpaved and ungraded road that is challenging even for the most rugged 4x4’s, not exactly for the faint of heart. Those willing to brave the bumpy ride are rewarded with breathtaking beauty. The treehouse is incredible in its design, details and amenities and is on a magical property with a truly amazing garden. Animals abound - many types of monkeys, wild pigs, pizote, (the local raccoon), scarlet macaws, blue morpho butterflies, and so many more. You can see the ocean from the treehouse and walk a few steps to the beach for the sunrise or the sunset. The sound of the surf lulls you to sleep and the gentle breeze that comes up the slope of the slightly elevated treehouse is cooling and lovely during the heat of the day. The caretaker Joel, who helped to build a larger house down the slope and below the treehouse, was extraordinarily kind and accommodating. I asked him if we could drop our bags earlier than our check-in time and he kindly said it was no problem.. He also helped us get a taxi to the airport on the day of our departure and was very helpful with information about the area and activities. The surf is epic, the hike to the waterfall right behind the property is magical, and there are endless opportunities to observe the flora and fauna of one of the most remote and biodiverse places on earth. Casa Contiki is an experience not to be missed, do yourself a favor and brave the challenge of getting there, it’s worth the effort and so much more! I can’t wait to return!!

If you are looking for a special place to stay near Playa Matapalo this is it! At the end of the beach road is a small group of rancho’s cabinas. We stayed in Casa Contiki, a 2 story Rancho style with 1 bedroom and bath on main floor with living room and kitchen, a second bedroom and bath are up a spiral staircase on the 2nd floor. The Rancho is all open air but there are mosquito nets around the beds which did a Great job keeping the insects out. The beds are comfortable, the bath area great. Complete with tub ( we didn’t use except to dry wetsuits 😃) big shower area. There is no a/c but we didn’t need it. Nights are cool and breezy. Lots of room to prepare meals, be sure to bring what you need with you, closest store is about 1 hour away. If you find yourself in need - Joel, the Property Manager knows a guy 😁 he brought us fresh fish and additional groceries for cost of food and a $20 delivery fee. We have told friends in Guanacaste about this home. We will be back!
